How To Clean Your Cold Air Inductions Intake Air Filter

Keeping your Cold Air Inductions cold air intake filter clean is essential for peak performance and airflow. Over time, the filter can get clogged by dirt and other contaminants affecting the performance of your engine. But unlike regular air filters, which are discarded once they are dirty, your CAI intake air filter is reusable and designed to last a long time.

Check out the video above to see Zach Attack Customs share his process for cleaning and re-oiling a high-performance air filter. We’ve broken it down into simple steps below, along with his expert tips to make the job easy and safe.

Remove The Air Filter

Start by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. Then carefully remove the filter box. Zach advises being cautious around nearby sensors or connections to avoid damage.

“There’s just 3 screws and then everything will come right out.”

Once the filter box is removed, remove the intake tube and pull the filter out of the housing.

Clean And Rinse

Using the cleaning solution from our Cold Air Inductions Air Filter Recharge Kit, spray the filter thoroughly to break down dirt and debris. Let the cleaner soak for a few minutes but avoid letting it dry.

Next, rinse the filter with cool water, aiming from the inside out. This prevents dirt from being pushed further into the filter media. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. Be sure to:

  • Use gentle water pressure to avoid damaging the filter pleats.
  • Repeat as necessary until the water runs clean and the cleaner is gone.

Dry Thoroughly

Let the filter air dry completely before applying oil. Zach stresses the importance of patience here – adding oil to a damp filter can reduce performance and lead to clogs. Set the filter in a clean, ventilated area and allow enough time for it to dry.

Re-Oil The Filter

Once the filter is completely dry, apply the oil to the filter in even rings across the filter pleats. Zach recommends starting with a light coat and adding more as needed. Avoid over-saturating the filter, as too much oil can restrict airflow of your oiled air filter or possibly coat your mass airflow sensor. It’s best to:

  • Use the oil included in your recharge kit for best results.
  • Apply oil evenly in a light coat for consistent coverage.

“Set your filter down and then let it wick for about 20 minutes. Then go back and see any areas that you missed.”

Reinstall The Filter

After the oil has had time to soak in, reinstall the filter into your cold air intake system. Ensure it’s secured properly and that clamps are tightened just enough to hold it in place without over-stressing the parts.

Why Maintain Your Filter?

A clean, well-oiled filter ensures maximum airflow and helps your engine perform at its best. Cold Air Inductions’ pre-oiled high-performance air filters are designed to last, but require regular maintenance to extend their lifespan even further.
